On becoming a US Citizen

So, I reached the land that so many yearn to lay feet on a student visa, then became a Resident years later. The question that seemed to come up from time to time was, "How long have you been a Lawful Permanent Resident? Before answering I would think about it and then hesitantly respond, "More than I care to remember". I knew what the next comment would be. "What are you waiting for?" Truly, there was no real reason. The fact was that I just hadn't made up my mind to do it, until I said "This is enough!". My son was heading to the US Marines and one of the questions they asked him was if his parents were citizens. Needless to say, along the way I had also missed out on many benefits that I could have been enjoying. I promptly got myself in gear, found a trustworthy consultant, and did all my paperwork. So this is how I finally began the final leg on my journey to become a US Citizen. Then came the interview and finally the notification to swear in. I can honestly say that was one of the proudest moments of my life - and joyfully accompanied by my son, a United States Marine.

God Bless America.
